FAQ -
Neck and Shoulder Pain

I am using good ergonomics at my workstation, but I still feel pain and stiffness in my shoulders and neck by the end of the day. Why?

- The human body is designed for movement. Sitting at a workstation all day and moving only a small portion of your hands and arms does not constitute adequate movement when it comes to the health of the connective tissues and muscles. Try this to bring relief: Periodically throughout the day, get up from your workstation, do some shoulder circles (preferably the kind I recommend in my self-care programs!), swing your arms while rotating your torso, raise your arms up over your head, shake your arms while they hang at your sides. If it is impossible to get up from your workstation, then simply hang your arms at your sides with your shoulders down and relaxed. The deep ache you feel as a result is a stretching sensation and is a good thing, provided you do not overdo it. Remember to sit quietly with your hands in your lap for about 10 - 20 seconds after completing this exercise to let the stretched tissues calm down.
